Blueberries are growing in Turkey like everywhere in the world, especially in the east part of Turkey's Blacksee region's cities, with its acidic soils, it contributes to the variety of products like hazelnuts and even kivi fruits, and it became a real alternative fruit species to the tea and hazelnut farming at the high altitude areas in the same region. There are nearly 90 species of the blueberries, which are being cultivated, like the highbush blueberries p.e. Vaccinium Ashei or lowbush blueberries.Especially in Turkey, highbush blueberries have started to sprad out, the plant can grow in colder areas, it is a perennail, bushy, deciduous plant in wooden structure and can grow up to 150-300 cm.

The bilberry complexity in Turkey

The fruits, sold on the market and in some supermarkets under the name billberry, are in real, crumbled, dried and artificially sweeten cranberries.


Cranberry’s homeland is America, in Turkey it is just in the trial phase.

The agriculture of this fruit hasn’t started yet in our country, so all dried fruits of this species are completely imported.

The blueberry with its dozens of health benefits and its recommendation to be used by diabetes patients can create a risk to health, because some of these fruits, sold under the name Blueberry V are artificially sweeten.






Blueberry didn’t grow in Turkey before, its homeland is America, it has been added to the turkish agriculture in the years around 2000, and it is a grapy type of fruit.

The fruit known as blueberry in the whole world has been named by Prof. Dr. Huseyin Celik as Maviyemis. The mentioned fruit with dozens of health benefits and has been recommended is blueberry or with its turkish name maviyemis


The cultivated species of blueberry:


Highbush (Vaccinium corymbosum)

Lowbush (Vaccinium angustifoiiurft)

Tavsangozu (Vaccinium ashei)


In Turkey the highbush blueberries are being cultivated.

The lowbush blueberries are used generally for industrial processes and spreaded out especially in Canada. The dried blueberries generally are being won out from lowbush plants.

Compared to the blueberry its nutritive value and its health benefits are less and different, the unconscious consumption of this fruit by diabetes patiets, in the believe that they are consumpting bilberries, according to its artificially sweeten poses a health risk.

Dried and artificially sweeten


The color of Cranberry (Turnayemisi) is reddish. This fruit is salutary for urethra- and stomach upsets and the oral and dental health.





Billberry (Coban uzumu) is according to the TDK (Turkish Language Institution) named as Yaban Mersini – Coban Uzumu.


The real billberry (Yaban Mersini) is growing on the plateaus of the Blachsea region, it is a lowbush plant, sprading out under the earth with its rhizomes, it is given single fruits and has 30 cm long shoots.


The name shows differences in the folk languages in certain regions, it is called Earth Lipaka, Earth Ligarbasi, or only Lipaka


Lipaka’s (Cay Uzumu) homeland is Turkey, it is a bushy plant growing in the mixed forests of the mountains, on each bunch are growing 3-5 thin, sour, blachish or blueish, juicy fruits.

It takes place in the same catagory with blueberries.


Billberries (Coban Uzumu) and Likapa (Cay Uzumu) are non agricultural plants which are growing wild in the nature.
